The last stand. Honor does not surrender.
On April 27, the U.S. fleet under Commodore Dewey sailed from Hong Kong toward the Philippines. On May 1, in Manila Bay, the Spanish fleet under Admiral Montojo was completely destroyed. The following day, Cavite surrendered. The Spanish Empire was beginning to disappear from the map.
On May 19, Emilio Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines to lead the Philippine Revolution, which quickly spread across Luzon. By the end of that month, some of the last news from the outside world reached Baler: the war against the United States had begun, and the Spanish fleet had been annihilated. After that, nothing. Silence. The mountain range became a wall. The detachment was cut off.
June 27, 1898. Baler, District of El Príncipe, island of Luzon, Philippines. At the farthest edge of the Spanish Empire, in a small town forgotten by the world called Baler, on the Philippine island of Luzon, a story of heroism, obstinacy, and tragedy began—one that would defy the passage of time. A small Spanish detachment of 53 soldiers and one priest took refuge behind the walls of the church. Completely isolated from the rest of the world, surrounded, besieged, and abandoned by history, they chose to do the unthinkable: resist.
For 337 days, under the scourge of hunger, disease, tropical rain, and Filipino bullets, these soldiers held the position against all logic, unaware that the Spanish-American War had ended and that the Empire no longer existed. What began as an act of obedience became an almost mystical feat of resistance and duty, where surrender was not an option, and the silence of the outside world became the echo of honor… but their faith, their courage, and their sense of duty turned them into legend.
The myth of the Last of the Philippines was born.

Each turn represents approximately two months of siege. Use cards, manage your resources, plan actions, and deal with historical events such as beriberi, desertions, American support, or attempts to negotiate surrender.
Only one of the two sides can prevail… or perhaps time itself will decide everything.
Based on a solid system of hand management and action points, the game flows through linked phases that reflect the brutal routine of the siege:
In addition, the solo mode allows the player to take control of the Spanish side, facing an AI system based on events and a priority structure that simulates the constant pressure of the Filipino enemy. It is ideal both for introspective games and for players looking for a challenging and immersive experience.
During months of relentless siege, the Filipino revolutionaries tried to prove to the Spanish detachment that the war had ended. They sent emissaries, offered negotiations, and left newspapers as evidence… but the defenders, isolated within the walls of the church of Baler, clung to duty and refused to surrender.
They suspected everything. They feared a trap. They trusted no one.
It was not until the morning of June 2, 1899, that Lieutenant Martín Cerezo, while rereading for the umpteenth time the newspapers left by the Filipino mediator Aguilar—which he had always believed to be forged—found a small notice that changed his perception. In the military assignments section, the posting of his close friend, Lieutenant Francisco Díaz Navarro, to Málaga was announced. He remembered a conversation with him, when both were still serving in Cuba: Díaz had told him of his wish to request a transfer to Málaga once the campaign was over, where his fiancée and family were waiting for him.
That small detail, so personal and so true, was enough for Martín Cerezo to understand that everything was real. The newspapers were not enemy propaganda. The Empire had fallen. The war was over.
That same day, after 337 days of resistance, the Spanish detachment capitulated.
The story of Baler is not merely the story of a siege. It is the story of a group of men who, in the midst of a collapsing world, chose to fulfill their duty to the end. It is the story of how an apparently minor page of military history became a symbol of honor, resistance, and shared tragedy.
It is also the story of a farewell: the last Spanish garrison overseas, the end of an empire, and the beginning of a new world.
Heroes of Baler: Philippines 1898–1899 is not just a historical simulation game. It is an invitation to live one of the most astonishing epics of modern history. Become part of that story.
